No one says you have to apply that style to all your rooms, and you certainly don’t have to constrain yourself to what others would feel are “appropriate” objects. Here’s something that isn’t intended to be shoe storage at all, but will still get the job done beautifully: IKEA’s BILLY bookcases. (You can see them in action here and here.) BILLY comes in lots of different styles and colors to accommodate your needs, and the shelves can be adjusted for different kinds of shoes (like flats and boots).

Fill a narrow gap – Skinny, underused wall spaces can be maxed out with special shoe holders, which allow you to display your collection with ease. If you don’t have a walk-in closet, no worries – you can overhaul a redundant hallway space, an unused cupboard or understairs area just as well by taking the same tack (or should that be hack…).

Thinking back to our floating cabinet, it’s helpful in a small space to keep the floor free and clear. Instead of a floor unit, try using wall-mounted racks or slim shelves to keep shoes up and out of the way, and hidden from normal view (which may be just as well for your well-worn sneakers).
