If you’re ready to update your kitchen cabinets, you’ll need to select a new paint color. There are many directions you can go when it comes to kitchen cabinets and it’s not always easy to figure out which one is best. Consider the other items and colors that are already in your kitchen and select a color that will complement them. Take your backsplash, counter top, floor and walls into account. White is a common go-to color for kitchen cabinets because it feels clean and fresh. It also works well with every other color and can brighten up a dark space. Gray and greige also look great on kitchen cabinets; the colors pair well with yellow and blue, two common kitchen colors.

Two-toned cabinets are also in style these days. If you like this look, select a light color such as a creamy white or light gray for the top cabinets and a darker color such as a cobalt blue or even cranberry red for the bottom ones. If you’re really adventurous, try color blocking your cabinet by choosing two bright shades that are on opposite sides of the color wheel—for instance, bright yellow and navy blue. Some designers are using the ombre trend on kitchen cabinets. Achieve this look by selecting one color and painting your cabinets varying shades of it. Chalkboard paint can also look cool on cabinets and will make it easy to record shopping lists and to-dos.

Energize your kitchen by painting your cabinets a bright color, such as emerald, cobalt or golden yellow. Be conscious of how it will coordinate with the wall color and fixtures in your kitchen, as well as the rest of your home. With vibrant cabinets, you’ll want to stick to light and neutral wall colors to keep your space from becoming too dark or busy.

If you prefer a pop of color for your kitchen cabinets, the sky is the limit. There are many shades of yellow that would really shine, from bright, almost neon hues to lighter, more buttery shades. Other pastel shades that would look good on kitchen cabinets include sky blue and mint green. If you have a big, airy kitchen and want a deeper, more sophisticated shade, try emerald green or navy blue—but only do this if you have light-colored walls; otherwise, your room will feel too dark and heavy.

To achieve this look, paint your upper cabinets a different color than your lower cabinets. While there are millions of color combinations, some of the more popular include black on bottom and white on top, or bold colors on bottom and neutral on top. You could also contrast colors between wall cabinets and island cabinets.

Painted cabinets look lovely, but they aren’t going to look totally smooth. “If the cabinets have a visible open grain, the grooves are going to show through the paint,” warns Don Fahrbach, president of professional painting company PNP Craftsmen in New York City. “Even if it wasn’t super obvious when the wood was just stained, it’s going to be more evident once the paint dries.” You can fill the grain with putty, but that can be time-intensive and challenging to get just right.

Of course, there’s no right or wrong color for your own kitchen. But for cabinets, it’s important you get it right the first time: “This project is easy but it’s not the kind of job you’re going to want to redo any time soon if you don’t like the color,” says Petersik. She suggests painting a big poster board with a tester can in the color you’re considering (you can usually get a small one for just $5). “Hang it up next to your backsplash and your appliances and make sure that’s really the color you want.”

This kitchen was designed to accommodate an enthusiastic cook and entertainer who wanted a contemporary feel that would not be at odds with her colonial townhouse. To create this look, NVS Remodeling & Design used frameless Dura Supreme Cabinetry in maple, painting the perimeter units in a creamy white and the island in a surprising splash of yellow (Sherwin Williams Butterfield with Espresso glaze). “To maximize storage, we stacked the cabinets to the ceiling, and specified deep drawers and tall pantries,” say the designers. “The open corner and ribbed glass doors prevent that wall-to-wall cabinetry look.”

“For a breezy Palm Beach kitchen, I treated this wispy-cloud gray as an accent color. It’s muted and calm, and on sunny days, it reads as the lightest, palest blue. Painting it on the cabinets and architectural details draws attention to the textures of the raffia wallpaper and pecky cypress ceiling while keeping the focus on the stunning limestone-topped island.” —Beth Martell

“Creating a hip, young kitchen while respecting the architectural heritage of an old house can be a challenge,” says designer Jason Ball. To meet the twin needs of this particular project, Ball chose cabinets in a traditional raised-panel style, but gave them a fresh look with a trendy color: Behr’s Dark Granite, in a rich semi-gloss finish. Hidden storage features complete the clever design. Deep drawers under the range keep pots and pans handy; cabinets extend to the ceiling for maximum stow-away space; and a pullout on one side of the kitchen keeps dog food easily accessible.
