Sameepa Shetty: Ask for the back room. Great food. Loved the chicken skewers, shakshuka, mezze & brunch eggs. Seasonal whiskey cocktails good too. Must visit while in Hells Kitchen

Unless you live in Hell’s Kitchen, we’re betting you don’t spend a lot of time eating in this part of town. But those who do will tell you there are lots of excellent restaurants in the area, from hole-in-the-wall Thai to upscale Italian. You just need to know where to look. A general rule of thumb when it comes to Hell’s Kitchen restaurants: your options vastly improve as you move north from the Javits Center, and as you move away from the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Then again, that’s probably true for life in general. The less time you spend near those places, the better off you’ll be. Here are our favorite restaurants in the neighborhood.

Another favorite amongst Hell’s Kitchen Thai food enthusiasts, Pure Thai Cookhouse is actually one of the best Thai restaurants in the city, despite having a name that makes it sound like a line of vegan noodles from the Whole Foods freezer section. Speaking of noodles, most of the ones at Pure Thai are handmade, so focus on those dishes, and make sure to start with an order of vegetable dumplings.

Thanks so much for this guide to great restaurants in proximity to the theater district. Definitely appreciated! Maybe send it in the the NYC TA forum? I followed your adventures in Israel last year, and I enjoyed our meaningful discussions about hummus! I don’t think that you will find too much hummus in Italy, but rest assured that there are other fine things to eat there. I look forward to following your travels on the Italy forum. Have a great trip!

We’ve had both Meske and Queen of Sheba, and liked them both. Can you recommend any other good Ethiopian restaurants? We recently moved to DC, so we’re getting super in to the cuisine now.

A former tool-and-dye factory, this expansive honky-tonk is done up Dino-style, with exposed-brick walls, reclaimed banquette booths and sidewalk picnic tables. An installation of recycled whiskey bottles hangs from the high ceiling, and the bar is a set piece from the Russell Crowe film Cinderella Man, stocked with draft beers from Kelso, Sixpoint and Brooklyn Brewery. Mercato is a popular and simple Italian restaurant in the lower part of Hell’s Kitchen, also known as the part you really don’t want to be hungry in. Is it the best Italian restaurant in NYC? No, but it’s definitely the best you’re going to do for a civilized meal this close to the world’s most disgusting bus station.

10 Tabata Noodle Hell's Kitchen / Midtown West 540 9th Ave. 7.0 MAP Next time you find yourself headed to the Port Authority Bus Terminal, do yourself a favor and hit Tabata Noodle instead. It’s not the best ramen shop in Hell’s Kitchen, but it’s pretty good and definitely better than what’s going to happen to you inside of that godforsaken place.

Sandwiches – City Sandwich.  Sorry I have to use that “one of the city’s best” again.  From Naples to Lisbon to the huge Portuguese community in Jersey, comes some of the best bread in the area, with some of the most unusual ingredients like blood pudding, sandwiches worthy of a run-on sentence.  Just try to study the huge menu ahead of time so you dont feel pressured or confused once there.  I like some of the egg sandwiches (egg based sandwiches got its own section) like Bench Girl, and of course the only on Tuesday, porky Roberto

Gotham West Market –  Perhaps the coolest thing ever to open in Hell’s Kitchen.  In a city suddenly flooded with all sorts of food halls, this is one of the more intimate, and less visited ones.  Main reason being the tourist free zone of 11th and 45th, making it more of a neighborhood stop.  Only about 9 high quality vendors, and a bicycle shop.  Ramen, tapas, burgers, Mexican, health food, sushi burritos, meat purveyor, high end coffee, and to top it all, some of the best ice cream in town.

18 Kung Fu Little Steamed Buns Ramen Hell's Kitchen / Midtown / Midtown West / Times Square 811 8th Ave. 7.3 MAP Great restaurant name or greatest restaurant name? Kung Fu Little Steam Buns Ramen is no joke, but for best results, order the food in the order it appears in the name. The ramen is the least impressive thing on the menu here, but the soup dumplings and the scallion pancakes are excellent. We’ve already petitioned for those to be added to the sign. What’s another four words?

2 Taboon Hell's Kitchen 773 10th Ave. 7.7 MAP An excellent albeit pricey Middle Eastern restaurant, Taboon is a reliable spot for Dinner With The Parents or Date Night in Hell’s Kitchen. Even though the menu features things like homemade hummus and lamb kebab in a pita bowl (pictured), they also serve plenty of easy crowd pleasers like whole branzino and hanger steak. Something for everyone.

The best ramen in the area, as evidenced by the long waits, even at lunch. Dining solo is your surest move for speedy seat acquisition, so go at it alone during your Midtown lunch break one day. Bring a book or a fully charged phone to keep yourself occupied, and bring some cash too. Totto doesn’t take the plastic.
